The new logistics facility "C3 Bremen" has now been put into operation at the Bremen Freight Village. With a size of more than 80,000 square meters, Germany's largest roof-mounted photovoltaic system is located on the roof of the hall.

Sustainability was central to the planning and construction of “C3 Bremen”, a joint project between BLG Logistics Group and Mercedes-Benz. In addition to a holistic energy concept for heating, hot water and ventilation, comprehensive building insulation and intelligent lighting control, the building’s own energy generation capacity was a key factor. The roof-mounted photovoltaic system can generate around 8.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually for the site.

“In many respects, the ‘C3 Bremen’ logistics center can be seen as a blueprint for the construction and design of logistics properties of the future,” says Frank Dreeke, Chairman of the Board of BLG Logistics Group. The convenient location on rail, water and road also contributes to sustainable operations. The center bundles Mercedes-Benz’s global Completely Knocked Down (CKD) production processes. Vehicle parts are prepared at the CKD for shipment via the major German seaports worldwide and assembled at the destination plants. Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group: “Transport logistics is a crucial part of the automotive value chain. Avoiding and reducing CO2 emissions through process optimization is thus a correspondingly clear focus for Mercedes-Benz on the path to balance sheet CO2 neutrality.”

“With the largest rooftop PV plant in Germany, Bremen’s industry is showing itself to be a pioneer in innovation and climate protection. After all, securing many qualified jobs in 2023 can only be implemented in a future-proof manner if climate protection is simultaneously considered as an elementary component of investments. We are impressed and proud of it,” said Senator Maike Schaefer. (tja)
